Monument de los niños Heroes

The pillars were erected to commemorate the 6 Mexican teenage cadets who died defending Mexico Cty's Chapultepec castle (in the background) from invading US forces on 13 September 1847 at the Battle of Chapultepec.

Statue of Tlaloc at museum entrance

The 23' high statue was found 30 miles from the city in a dry stream bed in the village of Coatlinchan. The unfinished statue dates from the 5th century AD and represents the rain god of the Aztecs, Teotihuacans and Toltecs. On the day of its removal to Mexico City, 16 April 1964, there was a heavy rain storm.

The Sun Stone

Sometimes called the Aztec Calendar, the stone depicts the 5th era of Aztec mythology. The ends of the first four suns are depicted in the centre around the sun god, Huitzilopotchli (Mexica culture c 1325-1521 from Mexico City). In the foreground is a carved jaguar.

-- Aztec goddess of the earth. Mexica culture (c 1325-1521) from Mexico City. The goddess wears a necklace of cut hands and human hearts and a skirt of serpents.

Jade mosaic mask of K'inich Janahb Pakal

(Pakal the Great) Found in the funerary crypt, Temple of the Inscriptions at Palenque, Chiapas (AD683). The eyes are fashioned of shell and obsidian and all the pieces were once fastened to a wooden backing, now rotted away.
